A Mercury Retrograde Survival Guide Compilation…

Yesterday morning Facebook was down for a number of hours. And it was perhaps the most productive morning some people had in years. Perfect for Monday Morning Mercury Retrograde. This usually stirs panic into folks instead of morning joe, and indeed there were a few people who were caught by the surprise of it all on my twitter feed. (Might help if people had astro calendars, though.) But really there’s no need for the fear or panic.  As a friend of mine likes to opt out of Mercury Retrograde, more people can opt out of all the negativity associated with it. Mercury Retrogrades augur a “new moon” phase for Mercury. If you’re gonna cast shade on Mercury Retrograde, then you might as well give new moons the side-eye too. Stay flexible and aware, so you won’t have to beware. But here’s a little help, all in one place.  I’ve compiled some links to cope with this Mercury Retrograde along with this week’s horoscopes to add a little more detail.

At the cross…

Today’s “Eid Al Adha,” a special day for Muslims.  It’s a day of sacrifice and celebration, preceded by fasting. I can’t help but be struck how this Eid comes just before a lunar eclipse at 25-26 degrees of Aries/Libra. This is the same axis at which we celebrate Passover in the spring, just before Easter. Of course, in the theological grand scheme of Abrahamic religions, all of these events are connected.  Christians often link how the sacrifice of Jesus as God’s son is like Abraham’s sacrifice, commemorated as Isaac for Jews and Christians, but Ismail for Muslims.

Astrologically, it is the axis by which Courage (Aries) is balanced against Consideration (Libra).  With an illuminated moon in Aries, it’s time to reach for Victory, to stand with courage.  It may symbolize a moment when you have to go out on a limb to do something that you know is right, though you risk sacrificing something that’s also been dear to your heart. The stories surrounding the holidays on  this axis point suggest by going out on the limb, you’ll find the branch firm or if you fall, you won’t fall far or you’ll land softly on your feet.  In fact, it’s said for Eid Al Adha that your sins are forgiven for the year before and the year ahead if you fast.  That is a matter of faith and, in my experience, there’s no greater assurance of that except what you find true in your own heart.  But you have to be listening.  That’s the Libra-consideration-attentive-listening part!  And then you have to act, that’s the courageous part.  (Let’s all pray, meditate, chant or hope Congress is truly listening  with their hearts on Thursday, the day before this eclipse, and can act with courage.)

If you have planets or significant points–like your ascendant/descendant, midheaven/IC, or north/south nodes (like yours truly)–within roughly 7 of those 25-26 degrees of Aries or Libra, then you can expect this is going to be a significant time for you to take a stand. There may be fear, but this fear, by faith, can transformed into freedom and victory.  I tend to think eclipses generally manifest specific events roughly between a month to 3 months after they take place.  A colleague gives a more detailed breakdown about this eclipse and that idea here.  The planet or point will tell you in what ways and what areas of life can you expect the changes.  If you need help with that, you might consider a session with me or taking advantage of the special below, if you’re eligible.

The Churning…

Today, Mercury “conjoins” with Saturn. Literally Mercury gets hooked at the hip with Saturn (from the Earth’s perspective). But what it means is that it’s a time for ponderous thoughts and some thoughts could get too heavy, even for speaking or writing. So it’s no wonder that I don’t feel inclined to write so much today, at least here. There’s a lot churning beneath the surface–with my dreams, with my other sundry writing projects and assignments,  and future plans. But churning can also stir up a lot of fears too, especially when Saturn’s involved. I found my mind fending off what fear was churning up. A quiet still voice in my mind challenged those fearful bats in my brain. “Why you gonna leave all this room for these bats when you have doves and birds of paradise to feed? Leave the fear behind, face your faith.”  That was scary, but so necessary to hear.

Then I ran into a fellow Sun in Scorpio/Moon in Leo friend who was also dealing with a lot of heaviness yesterday, for different reasons. She was on her way to feed herself “good” things rather than the junk she had been eating all day.  I’m not sure if the food she was getting or the coconut water I recommended did the trick, but I fed her a hug. And realized how that’s an apt metaphor for these times. We have to feed ourselves the good stuff, not the fear and deprivation that gets stirred up with Saturnine thoughts.

But Mercury’s hook up with Saturn can be great for sitting down with deeper thoughts, preparing meatier meals for your soul and faith, not your fear. So that’s what I’ve been doing. This Mercury-Saturn hook up is important for a number of reasons, both personal and global.

The hook up happens at 10 degrees Scorpio. (One thing to know about astrology, for reals, is that astrologers care more about degrees than “signs.” Degrees relate to exact relationships than general associations. It’s no accident, for instance, that you get a degree from a college or high school. It’s a key, rather than a generality.) Next month’s solar eclipse is at 11 degrees Scorpio, about less than a degree from Mercury & Saturn’s current tete a tete. This means that there will be parallels between what happens over the next few days and what unfolds with the eclipse from next month and onwards.  I say over the next one to three months, but some astrologers say it depends on how long the Solar eclipse actually lasts in hours.  This eclipse will last for 3-4 hours, which some translate as years. Not sold on that, but we’ll continue exploring.  One key thing is to notice what kinds of Mercury-like activities, related to all things travel oriented and communicative, happen this week for you.

The other thing to know and notice is if you have anything at 4 degrees to 18 degrees Scorpio or Taurus.  (I use a 7 degree orb. I’m also not sold on square relationships with eclipses, but I’m open to contrary evidence, so that’s why I haven’t mentioned Leo or Aquarius here.)

For me, I know I do. I have my Mercury at 11 degrees Scorpio, right in the heart of this eclipse, close to when I experienced this eclipse 19 years ago at 26 years old. It augured a lot of changes in my life…and a lot of traveling. I was on my first theatre tour and first major gig as an actor. I also started hosting a writer’s group, called Twelfth House, at my home for a little bit.  It was through that group that I met many great writers out there now, including Stephane Renee, of 900 am WURD fame.  I’m on that station every last Friday of the month, between 9a-10a EDT, talking about astrology and doing readings.

But it’s better to know what you have to face by degrees, so to speak, than by generalities.  That’s why it’s a good time to get a reading now as we head into eclipse season.  I plan on talking about next week’s eclipse, next week. It’s at 25 degrees Aries on October 18, the day before the US Debt Limit ceiling. So we’ll see how that plays out. In the interim, I’m offering a few things: a special and this week’s horoscopes.

Are Libra men worth the effort?

This article was originally published at

and is republished with permission.

Recently, on Twitter, I got an interesting direct message from a guy who asked, “Why do some women look at me sideways when they find out I’m a Libra?” There are a few answers to that question. First, nearly everybody gets the side-eye for their sign. For instance, I get it for being a Scorpio. (I’m reportedly a sex freak, though, like many Scorps, I can go for months or years without sex at all.) I know plenty of Geminis who don’t get a second chance for the expectation that they’re two-faced. But this is Sun-sign astrology, a bloodsport in some circles, especially when it comes to love. The truth is that there is a little bit of truth about a sign that gets stretched way out of proportion. Fortunately, we can sift through the hype and pick out the shards of truth about a sign. So as I talk about Libra men, what I say won’t be applicable for all Libra men at all times; but if any of my insights apply to some Libra men enough of the time, then it’s time well-spent.

So why the side-eye for Libra men? Libra men frequently are dashing, charming, only wanting to please, and often very witty. Of course, some of these traits might lead some to assume that he’s either a playboy like Libra Snoop Dog or that he’s in the closet with all that culture and refinement. However, I think the unease about Libra men boils down to the fact that they’re so hard to pin down, like Piscean men, but in a completely different way. They’re airy yet very rational, so they can seem scattered and at other times indecisive. Unfortunately, in our sexist culture, many don’t find indecisiveness in a man cute or sexy, even though they may tolerate this trait in a woman.

Yet there are very few men as well-rounded as Libras. Some say that more generals are born under this sign than any other. Libra men love strategy, pursuing options, beautifully laid-out plans and strengthening relationships. Of course, problems start when Libras gets too caught up in their idealizations of beauty and relationships. The challenge is for them to find beauty and balance in more intimate moments, not all the time. They may rely too much on consideration of others as they look to solve some problem or social equation in their lives. Libra has to learn that real beauty is in figuring out, privately or with a partner, the proper balance between the courage of his own convictions and consideration for others. This holds true whether your Libra man is ordering clam chowder or an engagement ring. And honestly, a gal with a Libra man may not want to work that hard, so that’s why many Libra guys get the “side-eye” treatment.

But Libra men have a hard time finding that balance. Like the other two air signs (Gemini and Aquarius), they love talking about, discovering, entertaining or creating choices, options and perspectives on almost anything. Too bad they tend to get overwhelmed by these options or their constant need for choice. So a nice romantic night out at a restaurant can turn into a blowout, if it goes like this:

You:   What do you want to eat? What do you feel like having?

Libra Man: I want clam chowder, but I also feel like having shrimp bisque. But then I see they also have a yummy avocado salad. And…

…so it goes for the next five minutes while your stomach churns. You want to be “nice” but as he gets more agitated, so do you. The solutionis to connect the Libra guy to his real scales, which balances the gut with the intellect. The operative word is to connect, though, because that’s really what the Libra needs in that moment. Libras want to feel connected to someone or something, yet as a cardinal sign, they must assert themselves. Confused? That’s okay. Allow room for both by appearing to narrow options.

You: Go for the bisque. You like shrimp.

Libra man: Yeah, but I like the clam chowder too. I think I’ll go for that.

By using a little Aries, their opposite sign, you provide a foil, a relationship dynamic to explore options, rather than leave him to do so individually. Again, it’s not because Libra’s incapable of acting independently as much as he’d rather act interdependently, especially if he’s with someone else. This requires flexibility on your part, too. You can’t get too attached to the decisions he makes for himself. For instance, our Libra man above might change his mind again as soon as the waiter comes. That’s okay. He made a decision once, so he can do it again.

Of course, it’s perfectly fair to be less understanding if your Libra guy waffles on decisions that jointly affect you. (We’re talking about Libra here, so he’ll even think you’re being fair!) But you have to accept that a Libra guy is less likely to be a direct/take charge/macho kind of guy. He may be too smooth, too quick, too polished … and too indecisive too often. Regardless, for wit, sophistication, smarts, good looks, fun, and socializing, you’ll find few guys who can match Libra men. You won’t be as sorry about his choices as much as the time it may take for him to make them.

Stare ’em down…Or not.

The Sun has a “stare down” contest with Pluto and Uranus this week.  For Aries‘ horoscope, I had this to say about stare down contests in general:

“One of the most fun games on the planets to play as a kid is also perhaps one of the dumbest to play as an adult: stare-down contests.”

I flesh out this stare down a bit more when I write this for Leo:

“Whenever we’re talking about Pluto activity, we’re talking about whatever it takes to get the best out of us, to dig deep to pull out what’s beautiful and authentic in us. Perhaps this might manifest from grueling workouts, deep psychoanalyzing or confronting your own frustrated desires. The 2nd awkward place happens with Uranus. This signals your need to re-ignite a spark of freedom & joy in your life that’s needed to come out for a while.”

To tease things out a little more, we’re talking about a time when we have to avoid digging our heels into combat another, but be willing to do that as much within ourselves.  Once that happens, perhaps the Sun-Uranus square augurs that we’ll find joy and freedom again once we’re willing to go long within.

But it seems we’re staring away from that and still intent on stare-down contests, as a country and as individuals.  I have two standout examples.

One is our own government’s shutdown. Again, this is another stare down contest between government officials where only the American people get hurt.

The other I read about yesterday morning while following this news story and videos.  I mean I don’t know about you, but it seems like beyond overkill to have over 25 motorbikes furiously follow after one SUV because the driver of the SUV accidentally struck a biker. That’s a crazy stare-down contest that could only end the way it did…or worse.  (In fact, it turns out that one of the cyclists, run over by the SUV as it tried to get away, may be paralyzed from the waist down.)

So if you’re inclined to dig in your heels against others this week more than looking within, re-consider.  It could do more harm than good. To see how this might actually manifest for your sun, rising or moon sign, check out this week’s horoscopes.

The cost of things…

On 9/28, I will commemorate the 33rd anniversary of preaching my first sermon at 12 years-old, on my mom’s birthday. Mom passed away in ’94, and I couldn’t be farther away from the Christian gospel ministry, but somehow the “spirit” of both are with me.  This year, on 9/28, Venus and Mars will square off with each other, following up on the conjunction they had about six months ago. Now, Venus is in Scorpio (another Mars sign) and Mars is in Leo (another fire sign). Venus in Scorpio  points us toward how our attractions pull us toward what’s unfulfilled and unfulfilling in us, especially from the past.  Mars in Leo is more about what we must act on now as our most authentic selves. These two couldn’t be more at odds. The square definitely fits.  And it also directs us to a deeper question: What’s the cost of keeping your pain vs. acting on what desire and could have…now?

When I started this post, I was just going to focus on that question. Then I remembered what 9/28 means to me.

Although I’m a Muslim convert, my formulations about the afterlife are soft, to say the least.  It took about 10 years for my belief in God (as something different as I once believed) to come back. It looks like my belief in an afterlife is taking a little longer.  So, I don’t fantasize about Paradise or Hell.  I mostly struggle to believe in either.  I don’t believe in traditional reincarnation, so I don’t have any fantasies about encountering my mom as my sister or daughter in another future life.  I mostly just miss her. Daily. Then there’s 9/28 every year. But on this occasion, thinking about this Venus-Mars square, I’m reminded of my mission to write and speak, just as I did 33 years ago…on her birthday. I remember what this Mars in Leo means to me. It has even additional meaning as this weekend I came from a lovely weekend giving a lecture and spending time with my wife, our extended Philly family, and friends.

All of this prompts me to remember a poem I wrote in 2009, or rather channeled at a bank, of all places. It just came to me then.  At the time, after a break up with my fiancee, a different woman than my bride, I was jolted into seeing the cost of keeping myself in my pain, as Venus in Scorpio may like to do as well.  In that moment, Mom didn’t come for me from the afterlife. She spoke to me very much in this life. Still.  Here’s what she “spoke”:

Not Still Born (as “channeled” to me by my dear departed mother)

I named you Samuel after the man
who raised me
I named you Frederick after the man
who raised your father.
I did not know Samuel meant
asked of God, though I kept asking
God for you to be alive when you would not
stir in me for weeks at a time.
I did not know Frederick meant
anything else
I only wanted peace between two men
who had fathered neither child who would
honor them both with a namesake.

I fought for you, because despite the worse odds that doctors could give you,
you had the audacity to smile after
all 25 surgeries to keep you here
I did not know how long I would have you
I did not know that I would have to fight to get
the boy bright enough to give post-surgical smiles to his mama
out of a school for “retarded” children
I did not know that I would have to jump in the street to hurl children, feelin’ bigger
than their britches, who would take your small size as occasions to brutalize you
I did not know that one day that I would
even make the President of the United States
find financial aid to get you to graduate cum laude
I only wanted you to live at least longer than I would.

I speak to you, because you squelch
your voice and squander your vision to make spending money
to impress the shallow when you are already miraculous.
You wile away the precious time
I fought for to avoid believing in your own talent and vision
You shatter the perfect peace of the name I brokered
to sign off on meals you half eat, clothes you never wear
and books you half read.
I did not know you would travel as widely as you have
or be as many kinds of things as you have.
I did not know you would study stars.
I did not know when or how
I would leave you as I have.

But I do know
you were not stillborn.
Write out the vision given to you.
At least for me.

Toward Fall…

The final week of summer opens up with a Mercury-Uranus opposition and a shooting at a Navy Yard.  The story at the Navy Yard is still developing, but a Mercury-Uranus opposition can signify surprising news like this or also flashes of insight and brilliance. Let’s hope more insight and brilliance is more on the make as the week continues.

My real concern this week, in a general sense, is the Pluto direct that happens on Friday morning, right after a full moon. The full moon raises people’s emotional levels, and I’ve written here a few times about Pluto and how it seems to shadow gun violence in this country.  As we approach Fall on Sunday, America really has to get it together about gun control, including with  cops too.  As for them, you can take your pick from the past week with this story at NYC Times Square or the unfortunate story of Jonathan Ferrell, a FAMU student and football, who senselessly lost his life at the hand of a trigger-happy cop.

Of course, for most of us, the issue won’t boil down to gun violence. However, we have ample celestial and real-world signs that we have to watch our mouths and tempers this week.  We can attempt to do that by adding an extra focus on  love and warmth in our prayers and meditations this week, especially on Wednesday when Venus and Saturn hook up at the hip by what we astro-geeks call a conjunction.  When those two get together, they tend to bring the cold snap of reality in personal and even professional relationships. It’s almost as if we could dub it the “Let’s chill” aspect. (The one positive feature of this aspect is that it can also signal marriage, the formalization of passion.)  That’s why I’m recommending that we add some warmth and love of our own rather than expecting that it’ll be “out there” waiting for us.  We have to work to bring it, like most positive changes that we need on this planet.

In the mean time, here are some horoscopes to help direct your attention on a more intimate level.  And a burst of love and a hug for extra measure right now!

Sisyphus…

Monday started off with the moon in Scorpio and Mars “squaring” Saturn. Translation: it was no “Manic Monday.” In fact, I usually describe the “Mars squaring Saturn” moment as driving with the brakes on. That is until I thought about something different: Sisyphus. I particularly thought of Albert Camus philosophical essay on the Myth of Sisyphus that I read some 20 years ago.  I was always moved by that essay, and, of course, the Greek myth still stays with me. Sisyphus, an ancient mortal king, attempted to cheat Death by tying him up in chains. Death escaped and when it came time for the king to die, he escaped from the underworld. So the gods punished him by making him carry up a rock a mountain daily only to watch it roll back down the mountain as soon as he got to the top–for all eternity. Camus’ essay is on confronting the absurdity and pointlessness of a life without meaning. However, he offers the idea of revolt and defiance rather than resignation and suicide.

Yeah, I know that’s all pretty heavy and deep stuff for a Monday, especially now that it’s Tuesday. But I think that Mars-Saturn square has lingering lessons for us, or, at least, for me.  Some of that was brought home this morning as I watched this oddball exchange between TV host Lawrence O’Donnell and NYC Mayoral hopeful Anthony Weiner from last night.  I’m no Weiner fan, and I thought O’Donnell was remarkably unfair and rude last night. (How is your opening salvo for a guest on your show gonna be, “What is wrong with you?”? All that Harvard education, Lawrence, and no home training? #CMonSon) Essentially, I saw Saturn as O’Donnell, attempting to get Weiner to look at the absurdity of his run, Weiner’s possibly deep-seated fears and what O’Donnell saw as his inevitable defeat. However, I have to give Weiner credit as the Mars in Leo squaring off against Saturn. (I guess it helps that Weiner has his moon in hearty Leo too.)   I won’t say that Weiner isn’t driving along with some damaged goods in some way, either of reputation, character, mind, or whatever.  However, I believe he’s absolutely right (gulp!) in being resolute in the face of futility or absurdity.  You don’t face a no-win scenario by quitting.  Nothing, specifically, has to be wrong with you, anymore than there was with Sisyphus. In fact, O’Donnell seemed pretty close to asking, “Why won’t you disappear into that sweet goodnight? Why won’t you just die like anybody else would?” Weiner may or may not mean the passion he displays. But, on the surface, I can’t knock his answers.  He, like Sisyphus, is attempting to cheat a kind of death, and daring to ask, “Why aren’t you?!”

When your week starts off with symbolic Sisyphus moments like this one, you might be tempted to ask yourself, “What’s the point?”  There might not be a single “objective” measure you can point to in the whole wide world except that you care…about something. It might not be the thing at hand. It might not be what everybody likes or wants. Or what anyone else thinks you can do. Or it could be exceptionally difficult. But it’s your responsibility to make it your own and push it up the mountain of your aspirations with all you got. It might quickly roll down and you may have to start over. But you never know what could change. In moments like these, your attitude and passion are what matter the most. In fact, they might be the most precious things you have.  Respect ’em, especially when confronted by, “What’s the point?”

Let’s see what your sign’s weekly horoscope reveals as your own “Sisyphus” moments this week:

Balsamic thoughts…

We’re just a few days from a new moon on Thursday. It’s a doubly important new moon because it heralds the Jewish new year, Rosh Hashanah. (Shana Tova!)  But just before the new moon, there’s a clearing and healing stage called the balsamic moon. The balsamic moon isn’t named after balsamic vinegar, by the way. Balsam in balsamic is used more as a balm or salve that one applies to a wound to clean and treat it.  It’s a quiet time to reflect on what went unfulfilled during the last lunar cycle and to appraise why.  It’s space to heal from all the business of the previous cycle. And then the newness comes, whether it’s the form of a new month, the first day of school, a new year or a surge of new feelings.

Today I’m on my penultimate day of fasting for the Muslim month of Shawwal. I’ve been alternately productive and just tired, feeling sated and ravenous. But I feel like there’s a clearing happening. I’ve been detailing some of the new projects I’d like to initiate during this new moon cycle. But the problems with new moons, sort of like I talked about a few weeks ago with full moons, is that we load them up so much with real-world intentions that we don’t leave as much room for the excitement and “feel” of them.  It’s been good to feel the drain and churn of being on the brink of the new. After another quick nap, I’m gonna burn some sage around the house and then teach my wife one of my favorite astrological techniques.  We’ll break our fast, go to prayer and then have dinner while continuing with the lesson. That’s relaxing for us. But we both know new things are afoot.  Sometimes it’s good to feel the clearing, the peaceful quiet of excitement before the rush of newness comes in. And that feels sweet.

Ewww…

I don’t know about you, but it seems like the gas or lemon face has become a big thing in the last week. If it’s not eww about Ben Affleck becoming Batman in a movie slated 2015, then it’s “eww” over Miley Cyrus’ performance in the VMAs last night.  This week kicks off with Venus opposite to Uranus and then squaring Jupiter tomorrow, so there might be a whole lot of “Ewww!”  However, wherever there’s a rise in disaffections and defections, there are new affections and alliances to be formed too. We can see quickly see “Ewwws” transform into “Ohhhs!” sooner than we might suspect.  Don’t get too rattled or get too tied to your “ewwws” or “ohhhs” this week. By the end of the week, we’ll all be ready for some “ahhhs” of just chilling out, neither feeling the compulsion to have to like something/somebody or unlike.  I’m looking forward to that.
