How not to end up a “Skewpio”

JesusRuns

I don’t know anything about dude running, but he’s clearly attempting to portray himself as a European classical idea of Jesus Christ,  according to a Detroit TV station. I guess he’s taking “he who endureth til the end” to a whole new level. And that got me reflective on yesterday’s eclipse and the other “interesting” things happening this week.  As I mentioned last week, this eclipse was personal for me. But it also has some overall bigger implications for how we perceive things. Some people may have been offended by this guy pictured above.  About 30 years ago when I was a Bible-totin’, rootin’ tootin’ Yosemite Sam Preacher, I might have joined in with the offense. Now, I laugh and get reflective.  Time allowed me to see differently, but sometimes it’s about a shift in attitude. (Or both.) But the attitude can shift things a lot more faster.

This week, speaking of shifts, on Thursday  morning we have Jupiter shifting gears toward his own retrograde with Mercury going direct on Sunday afternoon.  Mercury symbolizes, among many things, how we order and share thoughts while Jupiter symbolizes what how we expand those thoughts to reach broader, higher and with soulful expression.  So a retrograde (and a planet going direct) sounds like mixed bag of getting the facts right while challenged to be wiser and extend our reach.  Or put differently, we may have to be careful not to miss the forest for naming and identifying the trees correctly.

For me, the Jesus marathoner is funny. For another, it’s an image that shoots out as blasphemy and patent offense. Many, including me, feel the same way about blackface. Yet I do know that a joke always has a hint of something true, either about the situation or the one telling the joke.  The truth of the joke really does rest in who laughs and why. If no one does, then most people don’t think it’s funny. I guess much the same reason why people aren’t laughing during “Saturday Night Live” these days.

And that’s why it’s good to remember to laugh. The great thing about humor is the dissonance of an image or situation that ignites the flash of insight from a joke, if it turns out to be funny. It hits you and laughter just springs out of you.  Again, that depends on how well stoked or ethical the flash or joke might be. But in these darker, longer and apparently colder, at least in NYC,  Scorpio nights, it’s good to to laugh. It sharpens and viscerally connects you to your senses of perception. As a Sun in Scorpio with 2 other planets in Scorpio who grew up with another Sun in Scorpio brother, let me we Scorpios can take ourselves way too seriously. So during our season that sense of seriousness can get infectious, even with “non-Scorpios.” Then people become what my Sagittarius wife and I dub “Skewpios,”  seeing things in skewed ways based on a misperception that we might get dead serious about.

Between this eclipse, retrogrades and re-directions, we have to be mindful of how we look at things. Don’t end up a “Skewpio.”  I’m thankful for this Jesus marathon runner for reminding us that life’s race is long and we have to find ways to lighten up, especially when we have barefoot guys running marathons with faux crosses on their backs.

The cost of things…

On 9/28, I will commemorate the 33rd anniversary of preaching my first sermon at 12 years-old, on my mom’s birthday. Mom passed away in ’94, and I couldn’t be farther away from the Christian gospel ministry, but somehow the “spirit” of both are with me.  This year, on 9/28, Venus and Mars will square off with each other, following up on the conjunction they had about six months ago. Now, Venus is in Scorpio (another Mars sign) and Mars is in Leo (another fire sign). Venus in Scorpio  points us toward how our attractions pull us toward what’s unfulfilled and unfulfilling in us, especially from the past.  Mars in Leo is more about what we must act on now as our most authentic selves. These two couldn’t be more at odds. The square definitely fits.  And it also directs us to a deeper question: What’s the cost of keeping your pain vs. acting on what desire and could have…now?

When I started this post, I was just going to focus on that question. Then I remembered what 9/28 means to me.

Although I’m a Muslim convert, my formulations about the afterlife are soft, to say the least.  It took about 10 years for my belief in God (as something different as I once believed) to come back. It looks like my belief in an afterlife is taking a little longer.  So, I don’t fantasize about Paradise or Hell.  I mostly struggle to believe in either.  I don’t believe in traditional reincarnation, so I don’t have any fantasies about encountering my mom as my sister or daughter in another future life.  I mostly just miss her. Daily. Then there’s 9/28 every year. But on this occasion, thinking about this Venus-Mars square, I’m reminded of my mission to write and speak, just as I did 33 years ago…on her birthday. I remember what this Mars in Leo means to me. It has even additional meaning as this weekend I came from a lovely weekend giving a lecture and spending time with my wife, our extended Philly family, and friends.

All of this prompts me to remember a poem I wrote in 2009, or rather channeled at a bank, of all places. It just came to me then.  At the time, after a break up with my fiancee, a different woman than my bride, I was jolted into seeing the cost of keeping myself in my pain, as Venus in Scorpio may like to do as well.  In that moment, Mom didn’t come for me from the afterlife. She spoke to me very much in this life. Still.  Here’s what she “spoke”:

Not Still Born (as “channeled” to me by my dear departed mother)

I named you Samuel after the man
who raised me
I named you Frederick after the man
who raised your father.
I did not know Samuel meant
asked of God, though I kept asking
God for you to be alive when you would not
stir in me for weeks at a time.
I did not know Frederick meant
anything else
I only wanted peace between two men
who had fathered neither child who would
honor them both with a namesake.

I fought for you, because despite the worse odds that doctors could give you,
you had the audacity to smile after
all 25 surgeries to keep you here
I did not know how long I would have you
I did not know that I would have to fight to get
the boy bright enough to give post-surgical smiles to his mama
out of a school for “retarded” children
I did not know that I would have to jump in the street to hurl children, feelin’ bigger
than their britches, who would take your small size as occasions to brutalize you
I did not know that one day that I would
even make the President of the United States
find financial aid to get you to graduate cum laude
I only wanted you to live at least longer than I would.

I speak to you, because you squelch
your voice and squander your vision to make spending money
to impress the shallow when you are already miraculous.
You wile away the precious time
I fought for to avoid believing in your own talent and vision
You shatter the perfect peace of the name I brokered
to sign off on meals you half eat, clothes you never wear
and books you half read.
I did not know you would travel as widely as you have
or be as many kinds of things as you have.
I did not know you would study stars.
I did not know when or how
I would leave you as I have.

But I do know
you were not stillborn.
Write out the vision given to you.
At least for me.

Toward Fall…

The final week of summer opens up with a Mercury-Uranus opposition and a shooting at a Navy Yard.  The story at the Navy Yard is still developing, but a Mercury-Uranus opposition can signify surprising news like this or also flashes of insight and brilliance. Let’s hope more insight and brilliance is more on the make as the week continues.

My real concern this week, in a general sense, is the Pluto direct that happens on Friday morning, right after a full moon. The full moon raises people’s emotional levels, and I’ve written here a few times about Pluto and how it seems to shadow gun violence in this country.  As we approach Fall on Sunday, America really has to get it together about gun control, including with  cops too.  As for them, you can take your pick from the past week with this story at NYC Times Square or the unfortunate story of Jonathan Ferrell, a FAMU student and football, who senselessly lost his life at the hand of a trigger-happy cop.

Of course, for most of us, the issue won’t boil down to gun violence. However, we have ample celestial and real-world signs that we have to watch our mouths and tempers this week.  We can attempt to do that by adding an extra focus on  love and warmth in our prayers and meditations this week, especially on Wednesday when Venus and Saturn hook up at the hip by what we astro-geeks call a conjunction.  When those two get together, they tend to bring the cold snap of reality in personal and even professional relationships. It’s almost as if we could dub it the “Let’s chill” aspect. (The one positive feature of this aspect is that it can also signal marriage, the formalization of passion.)  That’s why I’m recommending that we add some warmth and love of our own rather than expecting that it’ll be “out there” waiting for us.  We have to work to bring it, like most positive changes that we need on this planet.

In the mean time, here are some horoscopes to help direct your attention on a more intimate level.  And a burst of love and a hug for extra measure right now!

Ewww…

I don’t know about you, but it seems like the gas or lemon face has become a big thing in the last week. If it’s not eww about Ben Affleck becoming Batman in a movie slated 2015, then it’s “eww” over Miley Cyrus’ performance in the VMAs last night.  This week kicks off with Venus opposite to Uranus and then squaring Jupiter tomorrow, so there might be a whole lot of “Ewww!”  However, wherever there’s a rise in disaffections and defections, there are new affections and alliances to be formed too. We can see quickly see “Ewwws” transform into “Ohhhs!” sooner than we might suspect.  Don’t get too rattled or get too tied to your “ewwws” or “ohhhs” this week. By the end of the week, we’ll all be ready for some “ahhhs” of just chilling out, neither feeling the compulsion to have to like something/somebody or unlike.  I’m looking forward to that.

When the harvest of your Saturn Return or full moon ain’t enough: 3 ways to cope

As I prepare to write this, I’m just reading about Lee Thompson Young’s possible suicide. I’ve seen his face, but I don’t really know who he is.  I’ve not seen his shows or movies. All I know was that he was young, 29; having his Saturn Return; and an Aquarian Sun who may have gotten a little too tired from the TWO Aquarian full moons we’ve had in the last month. (We’re due another one tomorrow.)  Full moons light things up, and maybe it just highlighted too much for him.

Astrologers make a swirl of romance around full moons, of which I’ve been guilty too. We wrap our proclamations of fulfillment during full moons heavy in optimistic gossamer, thick only by how much we wrap, not how much is really there.  We seem to give cart blanche and ferocious power to any intentions “planted” at the new moon with the hope of a glorious transfiguration at the full moon. We know well how to get people to drool for fruit at the full moon as if the Garden of Eden itself would globally de-cloak and tempt us once again with its long-lost yield. Well, what happens when it’s time for the fruit and it’s all too much…or too little?  I don’t hear as much about those things.

I was in Philly this past weekend for the NCGR Astrology Conference and yesterday I gave a short lecture on two  bogeymen in astrology: Mercury Retrogrades & Void Moon Of Course.  I happened to mention a few bogeys at the start of the lecture; one of them was the Saturn Return. I haven’t written as much on the Saturn Return as the Jupiter Return, because there’s a lot written about it out there already. Maybe I’m even saving more of my ideas for my own book. But the Saturn Return is a definitely a kind of harvest, though not exactly a full moon.  But the symbolism still fits.  Saturn Returns and full moons could lead to hard turns of life when the harvest and fruits don’t line up with what we expect. And therein lies the rub.

The 1st Saturn Return (as there are possibly 3 in a modern lifespan) at 29-30 represents where Saturn comes back to his original position in your chart, seeking a return on investment from all that your community and society has made into you. He will exact this ROI out of you for the next 29-30 years until the next return when he will more seek more for YOU, from your life experience dividends from the 1st Saturn Return, to make an investment in the society and community that has made you.

Similarly, the Full Moon reflects a moment where the intentions that had been planted or invested at the new moon are prompted to surface and come to light. Another way I talk about it is that if you were planning a party at the new moon, then the full moon would represent the moment when you actually have the party.

So what if your party sucks and you don’t feel you can make good on that return on the investment that your community’s put in you? That’s a real thing. I’m not going to pretend I can counsel folks through a blog post, but here are 3 things to think about:

1. Look at what your expectations and what fuels them.

When it’s time for things to come fruition, either by full moon or a Saturn Return, it’s a good time to look at whether your expectations were real or the remainder of childhood aspirations or another ill-developed notion.  If you were all hot to be POTUS by 30 and that’s unrealized, then you were in lalaland for real. You can’t even be POTUS until 35, so you were trippin’. However, you could be on the road to becoming POTUS and to figuring out what trajectory works for you by looking at historical examples and making creative inferences.

Between a new moon and a full moon is about 2 weeks. That’s a pay period for a lot of people. If you had visions of moving into a palatial apartment, per your new moon intention, then, unless you’re getting a palatial check at the next pay period, you shouldn’t expect a palatial apartment at the full moon. What might be more reasonable is to stock away some money to SAVE for palace in the not too distant future, we hope.  Or you figure out where you want to build your palace or find it. The key thing is to have measurable outcomes and goals.  Lunar periods are a little short for long-term goals.

2. Use check points as indicators for how things are going.

Before you get to a full moon, there’s a 1st quarter moon to accelerate your efforts & new plans and there’s a gibbous moon (the 3 day phase just before the full moon) to see how well you’re prepared.  With the Saturn Return, there’s the Saturn opposition at 14 years old and the Saturn square at 21-22 years old to see how things are shaping up. You are likely to encounter similar themes and issues that will surface again at the Saturn Return.  There’s thematic DNA throughout all phases of a cycle, whether we’re talking about a new/full moon or a Saturn Return per your original Saturn. You can get a sense of the themes at different checkpoints of time to see how things are progressing…or not.  You can use them to measure and evaluate your expectations, to see if you have what you need to manifest your intentions and have more of the harvest you desire.

3. You are not in this alone. Ask for and be open to help.

I don’t know, at all, what was going on in Lee Thompson Young’s life.  I’m sad that this morning  his landlord went to his apartment and found him alone in his apartment, dead, because he felt like he had no other options but to end his own life. I stopped judging suicide long ago, regardless what people in my Islamic faith say about it. I believe very much in “letting” God be God, so I let the Beloved judge. (Takes a lot pressure off, you know.) However, I do know as someone who’s gotten past his 1st Saturn Return that how you think of your life at 29-30 is not how it is or how it will be.  That’s kind of the point, actually. There’s a death that can happen and a different rich harvest that can follow. A Saturn Return is when you live enough of your life to bump against yourself, learning your limits. Afterwards, you can re-calibrate how to work with those limits to extract more out of yourself to match expectations culled from your living, not just your mind in theory or someone else’s expectations. You’ll know enough of what’s true for your life from just having lived a little more of it. If you get lost in your own maze of living, this is when you can solicit friends or counselors for help. Or if you know someone feeling suicidal, even someone you’ve never met, you can find help here

A similar thing to think about at a full moon. When a full moon doesn’t match the high hopes and intentions you had prior, be open to getting help or cultivating ideas from others for the next cycle. Waiting 29-30 days to bring another cycle of manifestation forward is a lot easier than 29-30 years with a Saturn return.

When I wrote the horoscopes below, I had more of the full moon and the superior conjunction of Mercury and the Sun in mind.  Interestingly, the Superior Conjunction on Saturday I’ve described as a full moon for Mercury, with the inferior conjunction as the new moon. It signifies a time when Mercury, being in the bosom of the Sun, receives higher directions and insights. The inferior conjunction is when we have to surrender our outworn ideas and hang-ups to prepare for fuller, more illumined ones.  I hope these horoscopes (and this post) help with that.

A call to action…

Tomorrow’s (Wednesday) is a 1st Quarter moon.  It’s one of my favorite phases of the moon. It’s when the moon is at the halfway point of being full. At this phase, you should or will be called upon to take some kind of action for an intention you set at the new moon. (In this case, last week.)

For me, I got married to my sweetheart right after the new moon, at the end of Ramadan on 8/8/13.  This week is all about taking action to help manifest more of that particular intention, for me,  like ordering additional bank cards, changing paperwork, etc.

Then at the end of the week, we have Venus going into Libra, one of her “home” signs to be in. This gives more of a touch of “grace”and the ability to find kindred support to the call of action of this 1st quarter moon moment.  For many astrologers around the country, this Venus in Libra is going to signify connecting with other astrologers at the National Council for Geocosmic Research (Astrology) conference in Philadelphia where I am presenting on Sunday on “Are Void Moons & Mercury Retrogrades THAT bad?!” (That lecture is FREE as are others from 12:45p to 1:30p, Friday-Sunday). Stop by if you can!

Let’s see what could be some areas of focus for your sign this week:

Magical Monday?

Today’s been one of those days when I’ve learned a lot, but I haven’t done much. A friend was gracious enough to share an online sales seminar she attended a few months ago and I learned lots of good stuff through the recording. I also checked out some efficiency tips they had as well. But with the moon in #Taurus today, I was sluggish and mostly tired. This is consistent every month. So much so that my twitter crew is used to me calling it #KryptoTaurus, as that transiting moon in Taurus is my personal Kryptonite.  For my Sagittarian fiancee, it’s the moon in #Cancer.  There’s no way to solidly predict what experiences you’ll have in different moon signs, so it’s best just to observe yourself over the months and what happens when the moon goes through different signs.

*Side note, anticipating some questions from other astrologers:  Although it’s easy to see how a Scorpio like myself might experience the transiting moon in Taurus as a drain, there’s no reason to expect why I experience the moon in Gemini as a boon, fertile for efficiency and good writing (other than the Moon’s in a sign of Mercury). I don’t feel the same way when the moon’s in Sag, Virgo or Pisces.  But the Gemini moon surge is how I’ve experienced a nice 2.5 day productive period every month. I don’t have any planets in Gemini or Sagittarius.  Go figure.  It doesn’t mean I’m not productive other times, but this seems like reliable help.

Anyway, everyone’s kind of giddy on social media about this Grand Sextile to complement the Grand Trine I talked about last week. Here’s a little more about it from a sort of giddy perspective.  Now I can tell you that I didn’t feel any of what Mystic Mamma was talking about. Maybe my 3rd Eye’s constipated. I don’t know. But I generally don’t get excited or giddy about aspects like this. In fact, I try, really hard, not to think them way overblown and melodramatic.  Or maybe I’m too  dense to perceive these “special” energies.  Either way, I didn’t feel it. Maybe some other people did. Or didn’t. It fact, I read this piece at the crack of dawn this morning by chance, and found it more down to earth and less woo-woo.  In fact, the last paragraph was really sobering and if it weren’t such a horrible thing that happened to the author, it would be funny. He says,

“My personal experience with a Star of David initiation was a car wreck that left me with a brain injury and two fractured vertebrae (some cracks that let some wonderful light in). I’m hoping this one will be a little gentler and more fun for all involved…”

If you’re spiritually attuned or aligned, perhaps you’ll pick up something. If not, then something might pick you up that leads to some transformative, albeit traumatic, experiences.  And then again you can have quiet mind shifts, like I had today.  Regardless, there’s a Star in the sky. Perhaps this configuration shines for you in all the best ways. Maybe not. But there are two ways to consider finding out. One is getting a consult with me.  Another, more general way is to read your horoscope for either your Sun, Moon or Rising below. I’ve thought about some of the interesting configurations happening this week for many of the signs, like the stand-off between Mars & Pluto and Sun & Saturn toward the weekend.  See how these affect you. Perhaps you’ll raise your vibration. Or maybe you’ll have more fun and quiet shifts of your own.

Going through the motions…

This week is a big week for the motions of Uranus and Mercury.  The Mercury station on Saturday, with him going direct after being retrograde, is a time to re-acclimate ourselves to newer, revitalized communication and crossing boundaries.  For instance, during this Mercury retrograde, there have been quite a number of international transportation accidents. It will be a time to look at what happened and how to move forward to make sure some of these things don’t happen again. Or to anticipate some of the same possibilities elsewhere. (I’m looking at you, LaGuardia.)   On a smaller scale, this Merc retrograde will likely be like other ones where we’ll have our tales of simple or profound miscommunications that almost or, in fact, did lead to the doom of marriages, relationships, partnerships or friendships. Or our private dramas that staged getting new phones or perhaps how we lost the old one in some crazy way. Mostly stuff that didn’t kill us, but made us go crazy for a minute.

The Uranus retrograde is a little different. On the same micro-level of our daily lives, the Uranus retrograde heralds a chance to review (remember that retrogrades deal with most of the “re” words in English) the progress we’ve made since Uranus went direct on December 13, 2012.  Uranus is one of the astrological signatures to keep alive the sparks of our individuality and creativity.  It’s also how we come to resist those things, people or places that don’t allow us to be ourselves.  It’s coming to deal with the truth of yourself. With the planet going retrograde, you can expect that some sparks to fly in your life if you have a prominent Uranus placement in your chart or you have other astrological signatures, like important planets or angles (Ascendant, descendant, midheaven or IC) near 12 degrees of Aries, Libra, Capricorn or Cancer.  If you need clarity with that, you might need to book a session with an astrologer. (Ahem)

On a larger scale, I’ve talked about how changes in the motion of Uranus or Pluto seem to go in tandem with a spike in gun violence or some big violent incident, at least in the US. In March, I wrote this about those changes. I’m still praying that this nation would get a grip on gun control. That’s the best I know to do, besides other forms of activism that’s happening. We have to be vigilant and know that we can have a more peaceful society.  We must.

In the interim, check your horoscope for insight for what’s in motion for you this week.

Just one of those days…

A week ago or so, as I settled down to write the horoscopes you see below, I realized that today Venus was squaring Saturn. Normally when I see that in the charts of my clients, by transit, I usually tell them that it’s a time to give yourself a lot of self-care, instead of expecting to feel appreciated and celebrated by others, even those who love you dearly. So I followed my own advice today. I watched a movie that a friend recommended. I skyped with a buddy. I napped. I cleaned. I debated w/ a White guy who couldn’t understand why he couldn’t use the N-word if Black people use it. I prayed 5 times, starting at 4:30 am. I answered emails. I cooked a delicious dinner.  I did a whole bunch of other stuff too, but, for me, I relaxed today. (That’s highly unusual for those who know me. I don’t understand chilling. Ever. But that’s a different post.)

I also start a new exercise regimen tomorrow. Just in time for the Sun-Pluto opposition and the Sun-Uranus square that also happen this week. As part of the transformation and innovation that these symbols inspire, I threw out any t-shirts and a once favorite hoodie that had a Superman “S” on them.  I was mostly inspired by Henry Cavill’s transformation to play Superman in “Man of Steel.”  He had to earn that “S.” I realized that might be a good motivator and strategy for me too. I’m not going to wear another Superman “S” on my chest until I feel like I look more the part. (Yes, that means I’m losing weight and gonna get some cuts/definition.) I don’t know how long that might take, especially with Ramadan coming up, but I’m working out at least 3 days a week to make it happen. Not too bad, considering Cavill worked out 7 days a week to prep for the role.

So the horoscopes below keep these planetary configurations in mind. They’re going to mean different things for each sign, highlighted in different ways. And, of course, if you know your chart, you can look to see how these horoscopes (and my read on the aspects for this week) speak to you through your Sun, moon or rising sign. If you don’t know what those are, consider a consult with me or get one of these cool reports with a chart.  In the interim, enjoy these while giving yourself some self-care:

Horoscopes for retrograde Mercury and high & mighty Jupiter…

Within 24 hours, roughly, Mercury goes retrograde and Jupiter from being challenged in Gemini to high and mighty in Cancer!  Big changes.  (But no need to freak out about the retrograde, please.)

Anyway, I’m feelin’ it. Yesterday, I described what’s going on in my life to a friend just within the last 24 hours alone, and he said that if I were a TV show then yesterday would have been like a season finale.  I think many people may feel like that over the next week.  And this doesn’t have to be bad. A good season finale happens with triumphs, cliffhangers, reversals of fortune and defeats.  I’ll have a separate post on Jupiter in Cancer, but this is a big week. Check out what your horoscope has to say about your signs…
